Stupidity Meditation

People on the internet call us idiots all the time. But how would we know if we were an idiot? It’s a conundrum, because if we were, we’d be too stupid to know that! I could try and pretend I’m smart and look back at my stupid self and judge that guy, but since I can’t make myself any smarter it won’t work very well. I could rely on other people to tell me when I’m stupid, but what if they’re stupid and therefore incorrect about me?

So I’m going to do a thought experiment and I’ll pretend that I am very, very stupid. As simple as possible. Now if you’ve got a bunch of pre-conceived notions about anything, any hard and fast beliefs at all, well you’ve got to leave them right here before we go further. Even if you’re just thinking, “This guy is stupid and his dumb post is wasting my time,” well that is a hard and fast belief structure so try and let go of that too.  (Don’t worry, you can get it back. I just mean for right now.)

Here’s some tips: studies have shown that your brain will be more flexible and more able to reconfigure itself after vigorous exercise, lovemaking, dreaming, eating a big meal, or after marijuana or psychedelic drugs, so pause your reading and come back if you have to.

Stupidity Meditation

And… here we go. Take a big inhale, now make a bucktoothed face, roll your eyes back, and exhale all your intelligence out of your mouth in a big sigh of stupidity. Feel your chest sag down and let your shoulders slump like a real dummy. Feel as if the brain-cells you have wrapped around all your problems and concerns exit your body like you just took laughing gas as a pre-op for your lobotomy. All your anxieties and pains about the past and future and who you are and what you stand for just dribble right out of your dumb mouth. Durrrrrr. The past and future don’t mean anything to you, dummy! You’re so stupid you can barely manage to deal with what’s in front of your face! Get as dumb and mushy-brained as possible.

If you are having trouble knowing if you are dumb enough, test yourself: Do you still think of yourself as a country, a race, a religion, an occupation, a hobbyist or a fighter for a cause? Do you still think you know anything other than what you have experienced personally? Is your ego tied to something, like thinking of yourself as having a great car or a great smile? If so, you’ve got to get dumber and more humble than that. You’re the bottom of the gene pool, so sink! You’ve got to let it all go, just for the duration of this meditation. It can be scary, I know.

We’re going to open ourselves up to every idea, let everything in possible because we just don’t know any better. (“Hey, wait just a cotton-pecking minute! If’n we let down our defenses, does that mean that demons cun come in?” Yes, I’m afraid it does mean that. But if you believe that, then you can also believe that we can let angels in too, or unicorns, or the jedi force. So please assume that the forces of good and evil will balance themselves out in the new dumb you.

If you think about the whole mental world of ideas as a circle and the beliefs that make up you are just a portion of that circle, then your beliefs are actually restrictions on everything you can know. Open your circle up wider till you can encompass all beliefs, no matter how crazy or dumb, because that’s the only way you can get a clear view of all the roads that you can take. Now don’t lie to yourself or to others because you’re just too dumb to keep track of all those complicated lies! (Now remember, if you can’t lie and you do something bad you’ll just have to face the consequences of your actions. Maybe that will help you to remember to do better the next time.) If there aren’t any lies, then we can see far more detail in that whole circle of ideas because each one of us is a reporter for our local perspective. More accurate reporting helps all of us see the big picture a little clearer.

The bigger the perspective you can hold, the more conscious you are of problems, solutions, causes, and effects. The more conscious you are, the more you aren’t just reacting emotionally to the world like a ricocheting emotional pool ball; bouncing off the ideas that were formed by your parents, your media, your society, your major institutions, your location in time (your era), or your government. The more aware you are of all perspectives, the more you can exercise free will in choosing one that’s right for you, you big dummy!

If you think of an atom as a little high vibrational solid ball then we’re going to be the opposite of an atom; we’re going to an expansive, permeable, ocean of attention that can see from every perspective and accept everything equally. Spread yourself out so that nothing is outside of you, good, evil, smart, stupid, happy and sad. Be aware of it all and don’t judge it because who are you to judge when you’re so stupid yourself? Ready? Now let’s go, dummies. You aren’t smart enough to know you can’t anymore. Change the world. And if you can’t do that, then just be aware of it and the change will come naturally.
